Im Loving… Anastasia Lash Lifting Mascara.

I tried the Lash Lifting Mascara by Anastasia the other day and I’m really impressed.  I figured if a mascara gets me excited the way this one did, it’s worthy of a blog post.  I really love it because it gives the lashes the volume, length and pigment you want but without clumping.  It has a lightweight texture to it also and doesn’t look “dry” when it dries!  Oh, and it holds the curl in the lash too!

Get beauty-schooled by Khloe Kardashian!

The lovely Daneen from Spoiled Pretty stopped by the other day for a quick Q&A with Khloe K and myself while I was glamming her up.  Check out the video and get beauty-schooled by Khloe Kardashian!  http://spoiledpretty.blogspot.com/2009/07/keeping-up-with-khloe-kardashian.html

Lancome’s Blog also just ran a post on the video.  “Are the Kardashian girls the best thing to happen to makeup since JLo?”  I think so!!  Here’s the link – http://thelancomeblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/are-kardashian-girls-best-thing-to.html

I’m Loving… Josie Maran Cosmetics!

Josie Maran recently sent me some goodies from her environmentally freindly makeup line and and I’m LOVING it!  I first heard of Josie’s makeup when I was in Miami and searching for new and different makeup remover wipes.  At Sephora, one of the girls recommended the Bear Naked Wipes by Josie Maran.  They smell really nice, are made with healty and natural ingredients and your skin feels fresh and clean after wiping with them.  Oh, and a portion of every package goes to protecting polar bears! 😉

You may recognize Josie Maran from her successful career as a  top model.  She was the face of Maybelline for nearly a decade, featured in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue for three years in a row and she was also a GUESS girl!  Needless to say, top models like herself know their stuff when it comes to makeup because of all the years working with and learning from amazing makeup artists, day in and day out.  Trust me, they’ve got some tricks up their sleeves, LOL.

The bronzy packaging for Josie Maran Cosmetics is one the nicest that I’ve seen out there – sleek, simple and lightweight.  I’m going to share some of my favorite products from the line and help spread Josie’s philosophy – “luxury with a conscience.”

Finger Paints in Sweet – You can use your fingers to appy these shimmery colors to eyes, lips and cheeks!  Apply the lightest shade under your brow bone and to the center of your lip to highlight.

Eye Shadow in Beach – This eye shadow may be my new favorite color right now.  It’s a shimmery champagne or pale sand shade.  Looks gorgeous on the eyelids and you can apply it wet or dry.  Texture is velvety.  Love it.

Cream Blush in Sunset – This is a coral shade cream blush that glides on sheer and looks natural.  I love it on the apples of cheeks.  For a super natural look, dab some on your lips and blend.

Argan Oil – This is a light-weight oil grown organically in Morocco packed with tons of Vitamin E and fatty acids.  For a dewy look, apply to the apples of your cheeks and/or cheekbones.  Soften and heal your cuticles with it, or put it on split ends!

Bear Naked Wipes – Dont leave home without them!

I hope you get a chance to try Josie Maran’s products and if you do, please let me know what you think!

My Faves for Fall’s Face –

So what exactly is Fall’s Face?  I’ve asked myself this question over and over again, season after season.  On one runway, you’ll see pale skin with smokey eyes, on another a bold lip and bronzed skin.  Following makeup trends can be confusing and overwhelming to most people but it shouldn’t be.  Try different products and looks this fall and if you’re not loving it, just wipe it off.

I’m going to share some of my favorites products that I’ll be using this Fall.  I’m definitely going to be feauturing some bold and matte lip colors paired with flawless, semi-matte skin and of course the “perfect” brow.  No worries for you smokey eyed girls out there because dark and sultry eye shadows are in and I can’t wait to start using them.  It’s going to be feminine, flawless and fun this Fall!!

NARS Makeup Primer w/ SPF 20.  This primer is lightweight, moisturizing and will help prepare your skin for a flawless makeup application.

Diorskin Nude Natural Glow Hydrating Makeup w/ SPF 10.   This is a natural and hydrating liquid foundation that will give you coverage and last all day.

shu uemura Face Powder Matte.  This loose powder leaves your complexion with a natural and matte finish.  It comes with a powder puff so you can press it onto the skin to set your makeup.  Gives that airbrushed finish that I love.

Lancôme Tropiques MinÉrale Mineral Smoothing Pressed Bronzer.  It’s a bronzer, blush and finisher.  It will add a touch of bronzed color and approve your skins appearance.  Also has an SPF 15.  Comes in different shades – my fave is Natural Suntan.

Dior Powder Brow Pencil.  It’s a long wearing powder brow pencil that defines softly.  No hard edges.  I like to use a dab of powder shadow on the outter corners over it for extra staying power.

Calvin Klein Endless Creme – Creme Concealer.  We all know I’m crazy for creamy concealer.  Its conditioning, looks natural and reduces the appearance of fine lines.  Try some on the lips too – makes a great nude lip shade.

NARS Concealer.  Love this for covering up blemishes.  For hard-to-hide undereye’s, apply a dab to the area and follow with a cream or liquid concealer.

Calvin Klein Tempting Glimmer Sheer Creme Eyeshadow.  It’s high shine, super smooth and sexy.  Try Champagne Satin all over the lid for day or Vinyl Indigo when the sun goes down.  Set it with a dab of translucent loose powder.

LORAC Color Me Couture Eye Shadow Palette.  The perfect neutrals and golds for your eyes.  Smoke up your eyes with these shimmery shades.  Use the shimmery black as liner or shadow or use all of them at once.

Make Up For Ever Aqua Black Waterproof Cream Eye Shadow.  The Ultimate deep and dark smokey eye that will get you noticed.  Truly is waterproof but can smudge nicely.  Go for a nude or sheer lip with this eye shadow to keep it looking feminine and pretty.

NARS Lipstick in Sephora Flame.  It’s a rich and deep red-burgandy shade.  The texture is semi-matte but very velvety.  This shade will give you the “look at me” lips.  For a softer, stained look, apply just a bit of it to the center of lips and blend out.  Love this lip with a clean eye and lots of mascara.

All of these products are can be purchased at Sephora or www.sephora.com.  Have fun with your Fall face and send me pics of yourself with any of these products on.  I’d love to see how you all create your own makeup trends.

Answers to your questions, Part 1

Hey guys, sorry for the delay with answering your questions.  Here is part one (the first 20 questions and answers).

1.     i love your videos / pictures and i think your amazing !!! i was wondering if you can give me some tips on how to correct purple/blue under eye circles and concealors/ correctors you would recommend? i love how you make everyone look refreshed and natural under the eye and it’s always been problamatic area for me so please if you can help me out it would make my day! thanks for your time : )

Thank you!  I suggest using a concealer with a yellow base to it.  Yellow works best to correct purple/blue under the eyes.  Lorac cosmetics makes really good yellow based concealers.  Try a shade lighter then your skin tone.

2.     What are your make up must haves? what are your favorite make up brands? what moisturizers do you use?

My must haves – Beauty blender sponge, MAC velour powder puff, L’oreal Voluminous mascara, Giorgio Armani luminous silk foundation, Smashbox bronzer in Suntan Matte, etc etc etc.  I have way to many favorite brands to list.  I use so many brands.  I pick and choose my favorite products from each line.  I use Kiehls moisturizer, Giella ginseng + vit c moisturizer, cetaphil.

3.     Hi Mario, Just started reading your blog. I love how you do Kim K’s face. I noticed that you make her cheeks so defined and they end up looking amazing. I have a face that is similar to that complexion. When going for an “everyday look” what blush and bronzer do you recommend? In other words what is your favourite Blush and Bronzer?

I can’t wait to see more “GET THE FACE” posts. You are amazing!! Truly an artist!

Thank you.  A great everyday blush and bronzer – Orgasm by Nars.  You can’t go wrong with that.  For bronzer, I love the Smashbox matte bronzer or the Nars Laguna or the Dior amber matte.

4.     Hi Mario, you’re makeup talent is unbelievable! you are by far better than the rest…i have a couple ?’s:

1)    how do you apply blush so perfectly and make it look so good?? Where and how is blush supposed to be used? it is my favorite makeup staple but i feel as if everytime I apply it, it doesn’t look as defined and flawless.

Apply blush to the apples of the cheeks only.  Start out with very little on the brush, smile, and sweep over the apples of the cheeks.

2)    What is the easiest way to apply liquid eyeliner?

Tilt your head up a bit in the mirror and pull your eye out on the outer corner with one hand, then apply the liner with the other hand.

3)    I looooove love Smashbox bronzer, but am getting sick of it, do you happen to know of any other great bronzers??

You can try the Christian Doir Amber Matte bronzer.

5.     I love you work!!!!!

What blush or bronzer did u use on this model (picture on top) I love it!
also whats your favorite bronzer?

I used the NARS bronzer in Laguna on Sky Nellor in that picture and Desire by NARS for blush.

6.     Hi Mario! I bought the Stila brush you recommended and I love it!!!!! However, I am having a hard time finding the LORAC flatter edge brush you used for your video with Kim K. Do you know where to find it or a good substitute for it? Thank you for sharing. You are the best!!! I love your works….

Try the Sephora brand retractable all over shadow brush.

7.     Hey mario!!! what foundations do you use most of the time? what is your favorite foundation? what is your favortie make up line?

I use many different foundations for different skin types/jobs, etc.  Giorgio Armani, Make Up For Ever, Stila, Dior, Laura Mercier.

8.     will you make anymore videos?

Yes, I will.  I have one coming out that I just did with Khloe Kardashian.  It takes time to shoot them and edit, etc but I will do more. 😉

9.     Hi Mario,
i think you are great at what you do and love alll your work so far!!
i have a big problem lol i have really small eyelashes what do you think is the best mascara? also how did you get in the business? i love the way you make Kim look so TAN how do you achieve that? ok love thanks muchas Gracias!

For small eyelashes, I recommend curling them first so that they appear longer and applying a couple of coats of the L’oreal Voluminous mascara in Carbon Black.  To achieve a tan look, frame the face with a bronzer.  Be sure to apply some to the neck too.

10.                        hey mario what loose and presses powders do you use?

I love the Laura Mercier loose powders right now and the MAC studio fix pressed powders.

11.                        Hi Mario,

What are good combinations of eyeshadow colors, something you can wear causally? Something besides the browns?

It depends on your coloring.  I like greens mixed with gold, applied with a soft hand for everyday.

12.                        Ok Mario, here we go, what is the trick to putting on false lashes, its so difficult but it makes a big difference in the complete look? And also please send me a link to a tutorial on the “smokey eye” look. Thank you soo much. Oh yah and are you gonna be in the Vegas area around June 24- 29? i and my sisters would love a personal tutorial make over. Thank you for your time.

Apply the glue to the lashes and let it dry almost completely so that it is “tacky,” then apply to the lash line.  If the glue is too wet, it will not stick.

13.                        Hi Mario!! i was wondering if you had any tips/tricks for working with oily skin. Are there certain products that work better then others like primers or eyeshadows? I am sure you come across many skin types so any advice or tips you have would be awesome!! Thanks so much! I love all the looks that you do and I am super excited you have a blog!!

When I’m working with oily skin, I use an oil free moisturizer or a primer first.  There is a product called Make Under.  It’s a great product and works nicely with oily skin.  They also make a good eye shadow primer.

14.                        Hi Mario, big fan of all your work – your video with K Kardashian was really helpful!
The one thing I can’t seem to master is the “dewy” look. I’ve tried using highlighters and primers but i still just look matte! I have normal/dry skin, HELP!

When you do your makeup, don’t apply an powder especially to the T-zone.  Use a very emollient moisturizer, not a primer.  Try Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer all over the skin.  To highlight cheekbones, use a liquid highlighter like the benefit High Beam.

15.                        Hi Mario! I would like to know how to match make-up and outfit…I love bright and colorful eyeshadows, but if I match it with what I’m dressing I’m afraid I’m overdoing…what do you think? when can someone wear purple, green or blue eyeshadows?

I’m not a big fan of matching makeup with clothing.  It can be a bit tacky I think.  You can try wearing colorful or bright shadows when you’re wearing nude, white or all black clothes.

16.                        i LOVE your work, i think you’re truly an artist. I’m sure you have experience with South Asian clients in the past – from that, do you have any products you think specifically work better on that kind of a skin tone?

What’s your opinion on MAC vs Makeup Forever? Do you like one over the other, or feel like it’s pretty even on quality of things like foundations and eyeshadows?

Products that are yellow based would better for your skin tone.  Lorac cosmetics makes great foundations that are yellow based.  I like both MAC and MUFE  and use both.

17.                        What self tanning should I use with light skin.

Neutrogena makes some great self tanners.  They come in different shades.  Choose the least dark one.  If still too dark, mix it with a moisturizer and apply.

18.                        I always have trouble applying blush without it loose powder falling onto the rest of my face, and it’s never even. What is the proper way to apply blush, and any tricks??

For a more even finish with blush, make sure that your skin is powdered first to prevent a blotchy look.

19.                        Hey Mario, I have dark hair and eyes, and a medium complexion, can you suggest a day eye color, that isn’t dull?..Thanks!

Try Lorac eyeshadow in Serenity.  It’s a great everyday color (tan/peachy/gold tone) for they eyelid.

20.                        Mario,
I am African American and LOVE the way you do makeup. I have two questions, I have really dark circles under my eyes and every concealer i try make me look ashy or greenish once it sets…any suggestions of a brand is should try? I have pretty much tried them all. Secondly, could you possibly do some get-the-looks on some darker skin tones so I can have a little something to go by! Thanks Love your work.

If makeup is looking ashy on you, you need to go with something that has more red in it.  You should most likely try a pallete so that you could mix colors.  Derma Color and/or Beauty Tech have great palettes with different shades including, reds, pinks, etc.  Choose a color that matches your skin and mix a bit of the red-ish  shade in it to cancel out the ash.

Wedding makeup tips and tricks…

Tis the season to get married!  I figured I should do a wedding makeup post since so many people are getting married in the summer and fall.  I think makeup is really important for a bride on her wedding day.  It’s photographed by a professional and you will see the images forever.  If there’s any day in your life that you want to look you’re very best and most beautiful, it’s your wedding day.

I get emails everyday from brides-to-be from all over (some as far as Moracco!) asking me to do their weddings.  I feel terrible because unfortunitely my schedule now doesn’t really allow me to book weddings anymore, but I have done many many weddings in the past and I always loved making a woman feel beautiful on her special day.  Below are some products and tricks to help you out.

The pics here are of my beautiful sister Vicky.  She got married last summer and of course I did her makeup, lol.  I love you Vicky 😉  Vicky usually does her makeup pretty natural so we kept with that theme of warm, natural and nude colors.  Theres also a couple of pics of Dara Godfrey, wife of the amazing designer Jay Godfrey, on their wedding day.  I flew out to Miami for their wedding.. it was really beautiful and so was she!  The last pic is a bridal cover I did a while back, “For The Bride” magazine.

Tips and tricks –

Photo Finish Foundation Primer by Smashbox.  This is a really good primer to use all over before you apply your foundation.  It helps keep the makeup last longer and keeps it smooth.

Secret Camouflage by Laura Mercier.  This concealer had 2 shades that u can mix to get the perfect match for your skin.  Go alittle lighter under the eye and for blemishes, match the exact skin color.

Loose Setting Powder by Laura Mercier.  This is good to set your foundation and concealer.  It’s very silky and sheer and has a bit of light reflecting which helps to smooth fine lines and imperfections.  Try putting a bit of it on a velour puff and applying it that way.  Great to touch up with also through out the day and night.

Oragasm Blush by NARS.  It’s a peachy pink with shimmer and just looks beautiful and so many skin tones.  Brush it on the apples of your cheeks (try not to go too low on the cheek with it).

Dior Bronze – Amber Tan by Dior.  A matte golden bronze shade of bronzer.  Brush it all around the frame of the face to warm your skin up.  Dont forget to apply some to the neck too!

High Beam by Benefit.  This is a  luminescent complexion enhancer.  Apply it on your cheek bones for a dewy glow.  I like to use it on the center of the lip too for a hightlight and on the bridge of the nose.

Silk Eye Shadow Wash by Stila.  It’s a water-based liquid-to-powder eyesshadow in a shade called kitten (pinkish gold tone)  It looks great on alot of skin colors.  Use it on your eyelid or to highlight.

Powerpoint Eyepencil by MAC.  This pencil is great for a wedding because its waterproof but you can still blend it nicely for a smokey eye.  Also great for the inner rim of the eye.  After applying on top lids, brush alittle translucent powder over it and apply again.  This will give the line alot of pigment and really pop.

B-Dazzle by GIELLA.  The perfect shade eye shadow for the inner corner of the eyes.  Makes you look more awake and gives that “angelic” look.  GIELLA can also custom blend it into a pencil.  www.Giella.com

All products except for the MAC and GIELLA can be found at www.Sephora.com .  Remember to keep your makeup classic looking on your wedding and don’t overdo it!  Xo

My favorite brushes/tools…

When it comes to brushes, I can NEVER have enough!

People always joke with me because of how many brushes I have but I really do use all of them.  Of course I have my favorites that I use on every makeup application and I’ll share some of them here with u…

This is the #15 brush by Stila that I use all the time.  I use the bigger side to apply eyeshadow all over the lid and/or on the brow bone.  I like this brush becuase it picks up pigment really well and the shadow doesnt fall off of it (I find that shadow tends to fall off of softer, more fluffy brushes so i use those to blend mostly).   The smaller brush on the end is perfect to create a defined thinner crease.

This is the NARS dome brush #13 that I use to blend eyeshadow.  Blending is so important with makeup and this brush works really well.  Just dip it in some translucent powder and blend away.  You can also use this brush to apply shimmer/shine to the cheek bones.

Sephora Professional Platinum Natural Smudge Brush#11.  This brush is one of the few that I use to smudge liner for a smokey eye and also to blend shadow on the lower lid.  I like a brush that isnt too soft when I’m blending liner.

This is the #11 paintbrush for brows, by BillyBbeauty. (billybbeauty.com) Again, this brush holds the powder pigment really nicely and it isnt too hard or too thin.  It basically gives you a defined brow but looks natural.

Another great brush by BillyBbeauty.  Its a very lightweight retractable lip brush and the bristles have a nice bend to them that allows you to get a sharp, perfect line.

#15 brush by Stila.  I use this brush to apply bronzer and contour.  It works especially well on the hollows of the cheeks because it’s a flatter brush.  The tip is angled as well – great for detail.
