Im hosting another workshop!
Im so excited to be hosting another workshop for Industry Art Shops! The last two workshops were amazing and I can’t wait for this next one which will be even better! The date is August 13th, 2011 in Los Angeles, CA. Check out the video below from the last workshop if you haven’t already. The workshop is open to all – makeup artists of all levels, inspiring artists and non-makeup artists too… Stay tuned for more info! I will announce my sponsors soon.
GET THE FACE! Kim Kardashian’s golden glow
I’ve gotten so many Get The Face! requests for Kim’s red carpet makeup that she rocked at the Unbreakable launch party in LA. She looked gorgeous as always – her hair was slicked back in a pony tail and she wore all black with beautiful gold detailing on the shoulders. I wanted the makeup to compliment her whole look and to have a nice overall balance so I went with golden tones on her skin and eyes and blended golds with pinks for her lips and cheeks. Read on for the complete beauty breakdown as I reveal how you too can Get The Face!

SKIN-
I started with moisturizing Kim’s face and neck using La Mer’s The Moisturizing Lotion. I let that settle for about five minutes and then applied Veil Fluid Makeup (No. 3: Sand) by Hourglass all over the skin and blended with a damp sponge. This foundation gives a luminous, lasting coverage. Under the eyes, I used By Terry’s Touche Veloutee Concealer in the Cream shade. I blended a bit on the eye lids as well to prime them for the eyeshadow. To set skin I used a bit of Jane Iredale PureMatte Finish Powder, mainly on the T-zone and over the concealer to set.
EYE brows, lids and lashes
I filled in Kim’s brows with Brow Tech To Go in Taupe, by Smashbox. To get the soft, golden shade on Kim’s eyes, first I layered LORAC Tantalizer Baked Bronzer on eyelids and along the lower lashes. Next I went over it and applied Eye M Glam highlighter (giella.com) over eyelids, inner corners of eyes and a bit on the brow bones. Sweep Eye M Glam along lower lashes as well and blend it out to get that smoky golden look. I defined the upper lash line with By Terry eyeliner in Macassar Brown. In the waterline or inner rim of the eyes, I used the Eye M Glam all over pencil (available soon) I added a few medium sized individual lashes by Reese Robert (really cool line of eyelashes!) for extra volume and finished off the eyes with two coats of Hypnose Mascara by Lancome on the top and bottom lashes.
CHEEKS-
I bronzed the hollows of Kim’s cheeks, along her hairline, jaw and down the center of neck with Terracotta Bronzing powder by Guerlain. I added a hint of color to the apple of the cheeks using LORAC blush in Pink and swept over the apples and along the cheekbones with Giella’s Eye M Glam highlighter. I used the left-over highlighter on the brush and applied it down the bridge of the nose and on the cupids bow of her lips. To add some of that golden glow to the body, I used Sigma’s Body Brush which is plated in 18K gold and has super-soft bristles! Just dip the brush into the Eye M Glam lid and apply straight to your body.
LIPS -
I lined Kim’s lips with Josie Maran lipliner in Natural and kept the lip shade in the same color family as the cheeks by applying a blend of MAC lipstick in Half ‘n Half followed by Eye M Glam AcryLip gloss (available soon.)
I finished off Kim’s makeup by spraying a light mist of Rose Water by Dream Organics on her face and neck. This sets the makeup and gives a fresh, dewy look to the skin.
I hope you have fun trying this look out. Don’t forget to send me pics of yourself so I can post them!
Xoxo, Mario
A look for spring
This image is from a beauty shoot that I worked on last month. Beauty shoots have always been my favorite to work on. Very few things make me happier then a good ol’ beauty shoot, LOL. I gave the model my interpretation of a modern spring look. I was going for a look that was clean and modern, but also strong. I used minimal product and focused on defining her features softly. How do you like the lip color I blended? Let me know in the comments if you’d like a breakdown for this look. X0, Mario
ELLE BEAUTIES
I recently collaborated on this shoot for Elle Mexico with genius photographer Adrian Nina. The story features ten “new girls.” They are the industries new generation of models, and future supermodels.
I gave all of the girls a clean, light and fresh look. Using Dior makeup, I focused mainly on the skin and with a very soft hand, I defined the eyes on some girls using shadow and stained the center of their lips . There was no bronzer, lashes or liner in site! I think doing this type of natural makeup is more challenging then doing a glam look. What do you think? Xo, Mario
Latest work – VanCleef & Arpels video.
VanCleef & Arpels – The Zip from Paradoxal Inc on Vimeo.
Check out this video I worked on for VanCleef & Arpels. It was directed by Armen Djerrahian who is one of my favorite directors. The amazing piece of jewelry featured is called The Zip. I used Eye M Glam highlighter on her cheekbones to give her skin that radiant glow
Enjoy! Xo, Mario
Get The Face! Kim Kardashian on cover of People Style Watch
I’m sure you have already seen Kim K on the cover of the current People Style Watch. If not, here it is. In the beauty breakdown below of her cover look, four of the products I used were mentioned but Im going to give you the complete look! See below to learn how to Get The Face! ;-) xo, Mario

On Skin - Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 in Sand.
By TERRY Touche Veloutee Concealer applied under eyes.
Skin is set with loose powder. I used La Mer’s The Powder in Neutral.
Brows are filled in with Lancomes Le Crayon Poudre in Brunet then brushed out with the opposite side of the pencil.
EYES-
To get the soft, golden shade on Kim’s eyes, I used Giella’s EYE M GLAM all over highlighter on the eye lids and tear ducts (or inner corners). I also highlighted her brow bone (right under the brows) using EYE M GLAM.
I swept Motives Eye Shadow in Cappuccino along the crease of eyes for subtle definition.
Under her eyes and/or along the lower lashes, I used Motives Eye Shadow in Toast. I blended the shadow with a clean brush to get a very soft and natural smokey look.
I lined and defined the top lids with Style Liner by Dior. I gradually went thicker with the line towards the outer corners.
I finished off the eyes by first curling the lashes then on both top and bottom lashes, I applied Bionic Mascara in Jet Black by Smashbox.
I bronzed Kim’s face along the hairline and on the hollows of cheeks using Cheekers Bronzer in Golden Tan by Covergirl.
To add a bit of glow to the skin I used Fusion Beauty’s Illumifill along the cheekbones.
On apples of cheeks I swept MAC blush in Fleur Power.
Her lips are lined with Josie Maran’s lip liner in Blush.
To add the soft pink color to her lips, I applied Colour Rich Lip Colour in Tickled Pink by L’oreal and finished the lips off with Lip Fusion Color Shine in Flirt.
NEW: fashion/editorial makeup
Working on fashion editorials with a talented team and gorgeous models can be very rewarding. I still get the same excitement, after 10 years, when a story I worked on is published. I love to see the final images laid out as a story.
This is my latest story shot by Henrique Gendre in the current issue of Surface Magazine. The gorgeous face you see is model Ali Stephens and styling was done by Gregory Wein. The shoot was all about bright solids so I kept the makeup simple and clean with a strong brow and subtle contour. For the last couple of shots, I darkened her eyes with shadow only.
Editorial makeup is very different from celebrity/red carpet/TV, etc.. . To keep it modern and editorial, I didn’t use any mascara, liner or blush. Hope you like it! I will post a Get The Face! for the look below (dark eyes) very soon. Xo, Mario.
